Orthodontic FAQ – Smiles Orthodontics
Welcome to the Smiles Orthodontics Orthodontic FAQ, your trusted guide for understanding orthodontic care, treatment options, lifestyle adjustments, and what to expect on your journey to a healthier smile. Whether you’re a parent researching care for your child or an adult exploring treatment for yourself, this page provides clear, helpful answers to the most common questions patients ask every day.
What Is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry focused on identifying, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth, bite irregularities, and jaw concerns. At Smiles Orthodontics, our goal is to improve both the function and appearance of your smile using safe, modern, and effective treatment methods. This orthodontic faq is designed to help you understand everything from diagnosis to care.
What Does an Orthodontist Do?
An orthodontist is a dental expert who completes additional years of specialized training after dental school. This advanced education focuses on tooth movement, facial growth, jaw alignment, and treatment planning. At Smiles Orthodontics, our orthodontists use their expertise to create custom solutions for crooked teeth, bite problems, spacing issues, and overall smile alignment.
What Is the Best Age for an Orthodontic Evaluation?
A great smile can begin at any age. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic screening around age seven. At this stage, we can identify early growth concerns or developing issues. However, orthodontic care is not limited to children—adults compose a large portion of our patient community, and treatment options like clear aligners and esthetic braces make adult care easier than ever. That’s why this orthodontic faq includes guidance for every age group.
How Do I Care for My Teeth During Treatment?
Proper oral hygiene is essential throughout orthodontic care:
Brush after every meal using fluoride toothpaste
Floss at least once daily, especially around brackets or aligner attachments
Rinse with fluoride mouthwash if recommended
Keep removable retainers and appliances safely stored in a protective case
Clean retainers gently with a soft toothbrush
Avoid boiling water or dishwashers for cleaning appliances
Limit sugary foods that increase cavity risk
Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods that can damage braces
Continue regular six-month dental checkups
Maintaining strong daily habits will keep your smile healthy and help ensure successful treatment results.
What Types of Braces and Appliances Are Available?
Smiles Orthodontics provides a variety of modern treatment options to fit every lifestyle, including:
Metal Braces
Clear or Ceramic Braces
Self-Ligating Braces
Lingual (behind-the-teeth) Braces
Clear Aligners
Early Phase Appliances
TMJ/TMD Therapies
Surgical Orthodontic Planning
Each treatment path is personalized to match your needs. Our orthodontists will help you choose the most effective, comfortable option.
How Long Will I Need Braces or Aligners?
Treatment length varies depending on your individual smile concerns. On average, orthodontic treatment may range from 6 to 30 months, with most patients completing care in approximately 18–22 months. During your initial consultation, our team will review your goals, diagnostic scans, and recommended plan so you know what to expect from start to finish.
Do Braces Hurt?
Braces don’t typically hurt, but you may feel mild soreness or pressure when they are first placed or adjusted. This discomfort is temporary and usually fades after a few days. Clear aligners may also create minor pressure when switching to a new set. Your comfort is always our priority, and we provide guidance to help you adjust quickly.
Do I Need More Frequent Brushing With Braces?
Yes. With brackets and wires, food particles can get trapped more easily. Brushing three times a day and flossing daily helps prevent buildup, cavities, and gum inflammation. Your orthodontist will review brushing techniques and tools—such as floss threaders, interdental brushes, or water flossers—to make cleaning easier.
Do I Still Need Dental Checkups Every Six Months?
Absolutely. Orthodontic treatment works best when your teeth and gums are healthy. Regular dental cleanings help prevent cavities and gum disease while you’re wearing braces or aligners. Your dentist and orthodontist will work together to keep your smile in top condition.
Can I Still Play Sports or Musical Instruments?
Yes! Orthodontic treatment should never stop you from enjoying your favorite activities. For contact sports, we recommend wearing an orthodontic mouthguard to protect your braces or clear aligners. Wind instrument players may need a short adjustment period, but most adapt quickly.
How Do I Schedule an Appointment?
Scheduling is easy. Contact Smiles Orthodontics, and our friendly team will help you choose a time that works best for you. Whether you’re a new patient or returning for ongoing care, we’re here to guide you through every step of your treatment experience.
